A Visit to Namibia: Exploring German Heritage, Natural Beauty, and Economic Growth
From vast deserts to the extensive Atlantic coastline, Namibia offers extraordinary and breathtaking scenery. Beneath the rolling sand dunes and the cold beach shores are a plethora of natural resources, investment opportunities, and a country well-positioned for potential economic growth. During a recent visit, FCA Corp’s Robert Scharar, CEO, and Ryan Scharar, President, experienced the surreal landscape while also noting the country’s investment potential.
“Spending time in countries around the world provides firsthand insight into local culture, economic activity, and global events. That real-world perspective can help add context beyond what data alone can show,” says Robert Scharar, who also serves as President of Commonwealth International Series Trust, which offers global mutual funds, including one of the few U.S. based mutual funds dedicated to African markets, the Africa Fund. Their visit revealed advancements in the oil and mining sectors, rising confidence in emerging market investments, and notable prospects within the tourism and hospitality industry. This article explores the trends positioning Namibia for a promising future.
Key Economic Drivers

Oil & Mining
The oil and mining industries play a major role in Namibia’s economy, producing significant outputs of diamonds, uranium, gold, zinc, and copper. The nation is the world’s fourth largest producer of uranium, benefitting from global interest in nuclear energy. In 2024, Namibia attracted $2.1 billion in foreign direct investment, driven largely by mining investments and renewable energy projects. Recent offshore oil discoveries by companies such as TotalEnergies have further strengthened optimism about Namibia’s future in the energy sector. This combination of mineral wealth and new oil prospects positions the country to potentially benefit from both traditional energy markets and the global transition toward renewables.
Financial Markets
The local currency, the Nambian Rand, trades in alignment with South African Rand. In 2025, it appreciated 13.87% against the dollar. The Namibia Securities Exchange local stock listings include a variety of industries. The market was up 18.9% in local currency for 2025. In December 2025, Namibia’s financial markets achieved a major milestone in modernization effort with the launch of its first Central Securities Depository (CSD), creating a stronger foundation for capital market growth. The CSD holds securities in electronic form and facilitates electronic clearing, settlement, and registration. This advancement enhances market efficiency, reduces settlement and fraud risks inherent in paper-based systems, improves liquidity and accessibility, and aligns Namibia with global standards of transparency and regulation. Next steps for the CSD include on boarding all market participants, migrating existing securities to the electronic platform, and providing comprehensive training.
With the launch of the CSD and strong economic momentum, Namibia is enhancing its investment readiness and attractiveness; this trajectory aligns with findings from a recent International Finance Corporation (IFC) study, which found that long-term investments in emerging market infrastructure projects have outperformed the S&P 500 over the past six decades. Despite this outperformance, investor sentiments remain cautious – partially due to the overstatement of risk. In addition, regulators in many emerging markets have introduced requirements that do not properly reflect the underlying risk, resulting in financing terms that are less favorable and misaligned with the actual risk profiles. Together, these dynamics point to the significant untapped investment potential within emerging markets—potential that Namibia is well-positioned to capture as it modernizes its financial system and strengthens the foundations for potential long-term investment growth.
Travel & Tourism
Increasing its investment appeal, the country has pioneered community-based tourism conservancies that attract private investment, directly benefiting the local communities. The government is also promoting the expansion of its MCCI (Meetings, Congresses, Conventions, and Incentives) sector; these efforts underscore Namibia’s commitment to tourism-driven economic growth. These developments signal a tourism industry poised not only for expansion but for a pivotal role in shaping Namibia’s economic future.

Swakopmund’s German Heritage
Culture, cuisine, and colonial architecture define the city of Swakopmund. During Rob and Ryan’s stay at The Strand Hotel in Swakopmund, they experienced high-quality service, modern facilities, and high operational standards— indicators that Namibia already has a foundation for an exceptional hospitality industry. With the nation boasting more than twenty national parks and possessing a rich cultural heritage, it offers unique experiences such as camel rides on the dunes, saltwater fishing, viewing desert-adapted wildlife, and dramatic landscapes. .
Opportunity in Namibia
With its expanding resource industries, modernizing financial infrastructure, and rapidly strengthening tourism sector, Namibia is laying the groundwork for potentially scalable and sustainable investment growth. For global investors seeking opportunity and long-term potential, Namibia represents an emerging market whose trajectory is only beginning to unfold.
